Aron Walsh

Aron Walsh is a Full Professor in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London. He leads the Materials Design Group. Aron joined Imperial College London in October 2016. He was awarded his PhD in Chemistry from Trinity College Dublin. He then worked for the US Department of Energy at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), followed by a Marie Curie Fellowship hosted by University College London, and a European Research Council Fellowship held at the University of Bath. His research involves cutting-edge materials theory and similation applied to problems across solid state chemistry and physics, including materials for solar cells and solar fuels, information storage, batteries, thermoelectrics and solid-state lighting. He has a particular expertise in the theory of semiconductors and dielectrics, and is developing innovative solutions for materials data, informatics and design. His group published a review on machine learning for materials science in Nature. These activities are supported by funding from the Royal Society, EPSRC, ERC, Horizon2020, and the Faraday Institution. In 2015, Aron was awarded the EU-40 prize from the European Materials Research Society and the Chemistry Society Reviews Emerging Investigator Lectureship for his work on the theory of next-generation materials for solar energy conversion, including halide perovskite photovoltaics. In 2017, he was a recipient of the Philip Leverhulme prize in Chemistry, and was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
